Being Biracial...PART 1 of?

What I wish someone would have told me about being both black and white…

  1. Sometimes you feel black and get treated white, and sometimes you feel white and get treated black. Yes, it’s very weird.

  2. It’s okay to be a little confused about who you are while simultaneously feeling fully yourself.

  3. You’ll always fit in yet not ever quite fit in at all. Choose to see it as a blessing.

  4. You may be labeled as the light skinned friend and hear the light skinned jokes. Yes, they hurt, but it’s not a hill worth dying on.

  5. You often won’t be seen as “black enough” to count as a black voice in certain rooms. When this happens, advocate for yourself even when it’s really uncomfortable.

  6. Unintentionally ignorant people will offend you. Choose to extend grace.

  7. Go ahead and check off all the boxes or none of them. Even better, draw you own boxes.

  8. Your perspective and experiences matter and are needed. Never forget this.

And most importantly, in a world full of colors, be sure not to lose your own.
