BICYCLING MAG COVER x BIKE OF THE YEAR
It’s finally here!
Bicycling Magazine’s 2024 summer issue featuring YOURS TRULY for their BiKE of the Year article on the Enve Fray.
Surreal is the best world I’ve found to describe what it felt like to walk into Barnes and Nobles this week and grab Bicycling Magazine off the shelf with my face on it beside other magazines featuring world tour cyclists and professional athletes of many other sports.
I purchased every copy the store had on shelves except for one! LOL.
April 2024
“So what are the vibes for today’s shoot? What do we need to make sure we capture today so that I get you what you need?”, These were my first questions when I arrived on site to shoot with the crew from Bicycling magazine this past spring. I figured they would say something like wheels or tires…or maybe that they needed to get more technical images of the bike for a component review. I was honestly excited to get to work and it didn’t matter what type of shoot it was going to be.
You can imagine my utter shock when John, Photo Director at Bicycling, said “Oh, it’s for the bike of the year.”
“The bike of the year? ….are we shooting the cover???!!!” I yelped.
You’ve heard the saying, stay ready so you don’t have to get ready, and this was all I could hear in my brain at the moment. I found myself thankful that I’d stayed in shape through winter and that my nails were done.
We were (potentially) shooting the cover and I was in disbelief.
When I reflect on how huge of an accomplishment this is, I realize it’s actually not about me at all. This is for the woman, person of color, or youth who might see this magazine or these images and actually think to themselves that they could get into this sport of cycling and that there is a place (on a bike) for them. When you consider how cycling has historically been a sport/industry of primarily middle ages white men, this is a big deal.
I’m certainly not the first woman to grace the cover of Bicycling, nor am I the first person of color, but the fact that as a newer cyclist I have able to work hard and put myself in a position to join the likes of those before me on on the covers left me feeling truly humbled and blessed.
details of the bike and shoot…
This is Bicycling’s 2024 summer issue and the cover article featured their choice for the bike of the year, the Enve Fray. This is where I came in as the rider for the shoot. The 4 to 5 hours I spent riding the Fray and putting in legitimate miles on both dirt and paved road left me with more than enough reason to see exactly why this bike was selected as the bike of the year. The Fray is not only crisp and responsive in terms of handling but it is insanely comfortable.
The Enve Fray is like sitting in a Toyota Sienna that drives like a Porsche.
It’s what Enve calls “the bike for riders who want speed, versatility, and max performance – infused with a World Tour pedigree and a call for exploration.”
The article’s images were shot in the New Hope area of Pennsylvania and it was as picturesque as you could imagine with curated small town roads and tree lined gravel trails. The town was perfect for the needs of the shoot and if you’ve never visited the area, I highly recommend it for the local shops, ice cream parlors, trails, and parks.
To Trevor (Photographer), Colin (Art Director), and John (Photo Director), you guys made my job so easy and took such great care of me on site. Thank you for everything!!!
To the entire team behind the scenes at Bicycling, thank you for all of the effort you put in to see our sport shine in all of it’s colorful ways. It does not go unnoticed.
